Here’s a fact you may not know:
In 90% of back pain cases, no official cause of the pain is EVER found.
And even in the few cases it is “found”, the diagnosis is often misleading.
How can that be?
Listen, literally hundreds of studies have been done on back pain. But only recently have researchers started looking at the factors not responsible.
1. For example, a recent study out of Switzerland was published in the medical journal “Spine”. It looked at whether people in “conservative treatment” for back pain (researcher-talk for a special exercise and stretching program) would be less likely to succeed if they had previous “spinal abnormalities” on their MRI’s.
… meaning, half the people going into the study had issues like herniated discs and facet joint degeneration, while half did not.
The results?
Whether people had these physical conditions when they started therapy or not made no difference to the outcome. Both groups of subjects alleviated their back pain at the same rate.
You see, researchers already knew that issues like bulging discs and facet joint degeneration were just as common in people without back pain as those with it. This was strong evidence that disc and bone changes alone were not the CAUSE of most back pain.
However, these researchers wanted to take it one step further and prove it. By showing that both groups were able to cure themselves at the same rate, they proved that the usual suspects like herniated discs were not the actual cause of the pain.
2. In another recent study out of Stanford University Medical School , researchers studied two groups of subjects: A control group with existing lower back pain, and another group without back pain (but prone to “Degenerative Disc Disease”).
They assumed — it seemed logical! — that the “Degenerative Disc Disease” group would have a higher rate of back pain or disability.
So, what did they find?
They found there was no correlation (although there was a correlation with stress … more on that later).
3. While in yet another study at the Orthopedic Surgery Division at Stanford … researchers wanted to find out whether “minor trauma” to the back and spine (meaning sprains and strains — typical minor back injuries) would increase the risk of serious lower back pain or disability. Subjects either with or without degenerative spine conditions were chosen, and followed for five years.
The clear result? There was no increased risk of serious back pain or disability.
What these studies clearly show is that…
Herniated discs? … Just as many people without back pain have them.
Degenerative disc disease? … Just as many people without back pain have it.
Facet joint degeneration? …
I think you get the point.
So if joint and disc problems are not the actual CAUSE of back pain, what is?
There’s only one other possibility — your muscles and related tissue. The real cause in almost all cases is compression and distortion of the spinal column, and irritation and weakening of soft tissue like muscles, tendons and ligaments.
The way you sit, the way you stand, the way you sleep — the small number of crucial things you don’t even know you should be doing — all contribute to you ultimately suffering from back pain.
When the spine is compressed, and muscles are weakened from misuse and underuse — and thus unable to do their job properly — nerves are irritated. This causes the pain you feel, and it’s simply your body’s signal that you’re doing something wrong.
This irritation is the actual cause of your back pain!

Your everyday habits cause the compression and distortion of your spine!
And that, in turn, causes irritation to the soft tissue of the supporting muscles, tendons and ligaments.
